Monday, October 20, 2003 at 5-7 pm — The book launch party at Jimmy's Downtown in New York City celebrating the publication of THE NEW AMERICAN CHEF and BECOMING A CHEF is a gathering of many of New York City's top chefs and tastemakers, as well as leading members of the press, who enjoyed Moet & Chandon Champagne, Channing Daughters wines, Ciroc vodka, Tanqueray No. 10 gin, Fizzy Lizzy fruit juice sparklers, and even Godiva chocolate cigars along with delicious hors d'oeuvres prepared by rising star chef Linda Japngie — not to mention the welcoming hospitality of restaurant impresarios Jimmy Rodriguez and Brenda Hilderbrand.  The dozens of guests who attended were greeted by the juggling talents of Will Shaw (who has shared his immense talents on "David Letterman," prompting Letterman to vow that Shaw "will be bigger than Regis!") and ranged from "The Sopranos" Emmy Award-winning writers/producers Mitchell Burgess and Robin Green and SavorySojourns.com's Addie Tomei and attorney Gary Tomei to real estate maven Barbara Corcoran to New York Supreme Court Justice Leslie Crocker Snyder to chef Jeremiah Tower to The New Yorker's Calvin Trillin.  A toast was raised to two restaurant world legends — Citymeals-on-Wheels founder and restaurant critic Gael Greene and chef Andre Soltner, formerly of Lutece — with appreciation for their contributions to the authors' books as well as to the New York culinary community.

"Thank you for including me in your celebration yesterday. I had the best time and met so many interesting people. Karen, I did get to meet Calvin Trillin and had so much fun speaking with him; we are both fans of the Daily Show and Garrison Keillor (Calvin is included in his new novel)... I wish you both lots of luck with the books!"

Rhea Basroon, Senior Vice President, Howard Rubenstein

"It was a wonderful event and we were all proud to be a part of it.
It was a pleasure to see you surrounded by your friends (both professional and personal) supporting your extraordinary accomplishments. We are looking forward to continuing to spread the word with the media."

Fern Berman, Fern Berman Communications

"We had a lot of fun — and the food [prepared by Jimmy's Downtown chef Linda Japngie] was great!"

Mitchell Burgess & Robin Green, co-writers/producers, "The Sopranos"

"It was an extraordinary party and a tribute to the respect that you engender in everybody who meets you.  Thank you for including us."

Laura Day, New York Times bestselling author of Practical Intuition and The Circle and Samson Day, St. Ann's student and Ford model

"Thank you so much for having Rosalie and me as guests at your marvelous book party. It was great fun. Everyone, I think, had a terrific time, and it is easy to see and hear that you are widely loved and respected. I wish you the greatest success with your new book."

Fahrusha, named one of the top 10 psychics in New York in a New York magazine cover story

"Congratulations on a superb party. You commanded a stellar turnout. The sense of camaraderie was strong, which gave me a sense that your work has brought common ground to many people. All seemed aware of your unique contribution to the field. We enjoyed being part of that."

Kate Fischer, Asst. Director of Publicity, John Wiley & Sons

Liz Marlin, founder, FizzyLizzy fruit juice sparklers

"I just wanted to thank you for the wonderful and festive evening you shared with me and so many people tonight. You two have great style and great generosity.  i met some nice people but mostly enjoyed seeing your real success. I left inspired by all you've done together and by your creativity and love of life. So thank you for sharing a slice of NYC pie. I look forward to seeing you soon."

Jacqueline Novogratz, CEO, The Acumen Fund

"It was truly lovely last night, and delicious...."

Jody Oberfelder, dancer-choreographer

"What a wonderful party! It was great to see everyone. We also met the woman (Licia Hahn) who coached Val for CNN (we were told you were the fairy godmother/father of that!). I also met Licia's mother, Lily, and kept thinking I knew those cheekbones from somewhere. Eventually she was introduced as Lily Hahn, and I said, 'I had a wonderful French teacher named Mme Hahn...' Shrieks and hugs all around! She remembers me, and where we lived, and all my classmates at Sacred Heart. We're having lunch very soon. The magic of K&A at work yet again! Your toasts to Gael Greene and André Soltner were so well done so relaxed, gracious, and eloquent. Many, many congratulations."

Cynthia Penney, writer

"What a party! And the kind of people I like: foodies. Thank you so much for including us. We had a very good time, and the food was very good. Made lots of connections, too. We wish you much success; you deserve it. The books are on my coffee table."
