WHAT to DRINK with WHAT you EAT
will soon be available as an iPhone app,
as recently reported in BusinessWeek:

"In late September, two authors, a few editors, and a technologist
gathered in Hachette's New York City office to work on an iPhone
application based on the popular food book WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT. The heavily illustrated volume will have to be adapted for a screen smaller than a playing card. Gurvinder Batra, chief technology officer of Kiwitech, a Washington (D.C.) startup Hachette hired to develop the app, handed out printed shots of the screen and navigation. 'To get to the right info I should not do more than two or three clicks,' said Batra. The team decided the app should be like a virtual sommelier cum food critic, featuring food and wine pairings and tutorials on flavor balancing."

Dear Friends,
It's an incredible feeling for authors to hold in their hands the first hot-off-the-press copies of a newly-published book. We felt virtually the same sensation upon reviewing the latest version of the soon-to-be-released iPhone app for our book WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT. It's a beauty!
We're thrilled that it will soon make the pleasures of food-and-drink pairing even more accessible to a broader audience — and look forward to being able to carry our WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT iPhone app everywhere we go (including restaurants, the wine store, the supermarket, et al).

We'd not yet finished our second cups of tea this morning when our day had already been made: We discovered that THE FLAVOR BIBLE had inspired its first poem!
Our thanks to award-winning writer Cristina Trapani-Scott, who has taken on the challenge of writing a poem a day for a year, and devotes today's effort to a poem entitled "The Flavor Bible":
The Flavor Bible
My husband reads
The Flavor Bible, reclined
in his chair. The dog is sprawled
with half her body lying
on the shed snow gear, dry by now
but left as if the children have
just come in, stomped their feet,
shaking the bits of snow and ice
from their clothing so it clicks
on the bare floor beneath them.
But, it’s well past the day of snow-
fall, where it’s new and sparkling
and the kids run eager to tumble
in drifts, build forts that will
disappear soon.
We encourage you to read more of Cristina's lovely writing on her Web site
"When One Line Drops from The Sky...." here.

We're still on deadline with our next book ON MASTERING WINE, so we're planning to work over the long Valentine's Day / President's Day weekend — but we were happy to be invited to take time out to celebrate over dinner tonight with friends. As Rikki and Bill were married at Picholine 10 years ago, it's always a special pleasure to return to the site of their beautiful wedding with them. And as we have long believed chef-owner Terrance Brennan to be one of the most talented chefs in New York City, we're especially looking forward to the experience.

Sweet Wines for Valentine's Day:

"What's the grown-up version of candy hearts? Perhaps a sweet little bottle of dessert wine. Sweet wines don't get the same sort of press as the big guns — chardonnay and cab — but they have a place at the table, especially at this time of year when romance is in the air, and possibly on the menu....'Sweet wines are SO overlooked,' says Karen Page, who with husband Andrew Dornenburg wrote THE FLAVOR BIBLE and WHAT TO DRINK WITH WHAT YOU EAT. 'They often get no respect, except by those in the know.' Some affordable (under $30) recommendations from Page and Dornenburg: Moscato d'Asti, sweet semi-sparkling wines from Italy that also are low in alcohol, which can be a good thing at the end of dinner. There are many good producers; one to try is Vietti. Ice wines, made with grapes that have been allowed to freeze on the vine. These wines can be expensive, but Canadian vintner Jackson-Triggs makes a number of reasonably priced bottles. Alcyone, a red dessert wine from Uruguay. This runs in the $20 to $30 range and has overtones of the campfire classic, s'mores — hints of chocolate, marshmallows and a bit of spice. 'It's one of the most beguiling wines we've ever tasted,' says Dornenburg."

THE FLAVOR BIBLE Named One of the "Best Books of the Decade"
"Books of the Decade: 2000-2009: When compiling these lists, I came back to the books I cook from the most in addition to a few that I simply enjoy reading, cover to cover, like a novel, for their narrative approach, to a couple that I'm too intimidated, still, to even think about cooking from, but remain a resource of inspired ideas....THE FLAVOR BIBLE by Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg."
